ABOUT THE FOOD ALLERGY INITIATIVE (FAI) NORTHWEST

The 4th Annual FAI Northwest Benefit Dinner will be held on Friday, May 14, 2010, at Tom Douglas’ Palace Ballroom in downtown Seattle.  Presented by the Food Allergy Initiative Northwest (FAI NW), this event raises funds for research that seeks a cure for life-threatening food allergies, as well as education programs that keep schools, camps, and restaurants safe for food-allergic children and adults in our community.  This event has raised more than $1 million over the past three years.

Each year, FAI NW honors a prominent individual or a couple who have been strong supporters of FAI and the food-allergic community.  Previous honorees are famed software developer Anders Hejlsberg of Microsoft; Wally Walker, former NBA player and longtime executive with the Seattle Supersonics and Storm; and Mark Britton (CEO of Avvo, Inc., and one of Seattle Business Monthly’s 2007 “Top 25 Innovators”) and his wife, Brigid.  A highlight of the event is the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to an outstanding chef/restaurateur who is committed to keeping food-allergic diners safe.  This year, we will honor Mark Fuller, chef/owner of Spring Hill and one of Food & Wine’s Best New Chefs of 2009.  Past recipients are Tom Douglas, Thierry Rautureau (Rover’s), and Johnathan Sundstrom (Lark).  Amy Clancy, Consumer Investigator for KIRO TV, will emcee the evening once again and The Main Attraction will perform live on-stage.

FAI Northwest was founded in 2006 by a group of dedicated local parents who wanted to heighten food allergy awareness while raising funds to find a cure.  FAI Northwest is comprised of members who have a child with a life-threatening food allergy, has a food allergy him/herself, or is a physician who treats food-allergic patients].  In addition to supporting cutting-edge research worldwide, FAI Northwest is committed to training and educating the staff at schools, day care centers, and camps throughout the region.

FAI’s mission is compelling and urgent.  Food allergies affect more than 12 million Americans, including 3 million children—and the prevalence of this disease continues to increase dramatically.  Even a minuscule amount of the wrong food can result in a potentially fatal reaction.  In fact, every year, food-allergic reactions result in approximately 125,000 emergency room visits and 150 deaths.  Founded in 1998 by concerned parents and grandparents, FAI is a national, nonprofit organization dedicated to finding a cure.  We are the largest private source of funding for food allergy research in the United States.  Since our inception, we have invested more than $65 million in mission-critical programs.
